Chess is the famous strategy board game where two players have an 'army' consisting of a king, queen, 2 bishops, 2 horses, 2 rooks and 8 pawns.

It is thought to be conceived in India as a present to a king. In return for the design the advisor says that he will be content with rice grains laid on the board; 1 on the first field, 2 on the second, 4 on the third, 16 on the fourth, and so on, each field multiplying by itself (exponentially). The king smiles and thinks he comes away easily. But actually when you do the maths, you find out that last field has so much rice that even today the whole world production of rice is not enough to fulfill this wish.
